“Leather Lesson 101”!

If you have been out in the world of leather furniture shopping, you have no doubt encountered everything from a leather-look ‘pleather’ to the finest butter-soft leather utilized in the manufacturer of ultra-high-end furniture. What’s the difference, and how do you decide what leather option to select? To help you in your buying decision, let’s take a brief look at some of the differences between the available leather choices.

The difference between top grain leather and bonded or more standard leather furniture is more than just price. Top grain leather pieces are expensive, but they’re also one of the highest grades of leather upholstery available. Bonded leather costs are significantly less in comparison, because this type leather is made of scraps of leather and other less expensive materials. The percentage of actual leather versus other materials differs between manufacturers, must can range as low as 10% leather.Leather that is used to upholster a sofa or recliner, is typically made from cowhide that has been buffed or sanded and tanned to provide a soft, durable covering. The hides are split into at least three layers: The uppermost layer is refinished to remove imperfections and sold as top- grain leather. The lower layers that require more refinishing and treatment are sold as split leathers. Pieces not useful for any of these first few grades are mixed with a bonding agent, or glue, and heated and rolled to make bonded leather.

Bonded Leather

Bonded leather used on sofas and other furniture is typically blended with polyurethane or vinyl and then given a fabric backing and a final layer of latex. The surface material that you see is often polyurethane that has been stamped to give it a leather look. Bonded leather furniture will last about five years or more depending on the manufacturer, and is easier to spot clean than top grain leather. Due to the fact bonded leather doesn’t go through a tanning process, it contains low levels of formaldehyde and is more ideal for those with leather allergies. It is also more affordable than top grain leather sofas. Various Zero Gravity chairs from Human Touch are available in bonded leather as well as many zero gravity massage chairs.

Top Grain Leather

At Human Touch, our leather is aniline dyed (the leather has been dyed all the way through), a process that is normally found only in premium, or full- grade leather. Additionally, the Human Touch PC Zero Gravity recliners are constructed from the strongest and most supple part of the hide. The texture is soft to the touch with rich and inviting color hues to select from.

Top grain leather are made with material taken from the top layer of hides that are sanded and then tanned before being cut to cover the sofa. Sanding the leather removes scars, branding marks and scrapes that are often present in this layer of hide. Top grain leather upholstery may be of different grades, depending on the amount of sanding and surface preparation required to remove blemishes and to meet quality standards. A cheaper top grain leather sofa typically is one that has required extensive refinishing to correct imperfections.

Top grain leather is made from the outer most layer of a hide, and will be sanded or processed to conceal imperfections. Top grain is stronger and a higher quality leather than split-grain because the outer layer is the most durable. Top grain leather may have texture applied during manufacturing to give it the look of an exotic alligator, ostrich or other type of skin.

Whenever you see the label “top grain” on a tag the reference is to where the leather was cut rather than the grade. Considered one of the most versatile and attractive leather cuts, it is also considered to be the toughest leather upholstery available, and will keep its appearance for up to 15 years or more with proper care.

Premium Grade Leather

Full grain, or premium leather also comes from the outer most layer of the hide and is the highest grade available. Unlike top-grain, it is not sanded or processed, leaving intact the natural grain and markings of the hide..

There are also variations in how manufacturers prepare and finish the leather. An aniline dye (remember that this is leather that has been dyed all the way through) offers the best finish to protect your leather recliner from scratches, stains or fading. For most consumers, the most desirable premium leather, remains natural. The markings from bug bites, a scar from a barb wire fence, or the tiny wrinkles that occur on skin are evident. These marks of living give unique characteristics to the hide. Additionally, this type leather furniture offers the most premium durability, strength and beauty of all the leather types.

The good news is that only five percent of all the world’s natural, uncorrected cowhides are sufficiently free of imperfections to meet the high standards set by Human Touch to qualify for their premium leather. These beautiful aniline-dyed hides are carefully measured, and cut and sown under one roof. This produces the most supple, resilient, and luxuriously feeling leather imaginable! Kudos to Human Touch for going a step above and beyond to provide an affordable, yet “perfect” recliner!
