RX Exemption for Florida State Sales Tax
Please note: For your patient’s purchase to qualify for the sales tax exemption in the State of Florida, one of the following options must be followed exactly adhered to. The valid Rx MUST be received BEFORE delivery of your purchase. Not valid after purchase is delivered.
Option #1: Traditional Rx Pad: If a Traditional Rx pad is being used, then only the description of the item being prescribed is required. i.e. “ADJUSTABLE BED “, “MASSAGE CHAIR” OR “ZERO GRAVITY CHAIR”. No further documentation on the RX is required IF written on an actual traditional RX PAD.
Option #2: Letterhead or other electronically printed forms.
IF NOT ON A TRADITIONAL Rx PAD IT MUST STATE SPECIFICALLY THESE WORDS TO BE VALID:
Example for an adjustable bed:
“I PRESCRIBE AN ADJUSTABLE BED AS MEDICALLY NECESSARY”
NOTE: THE EXACT ITEM must be listed- i.e. “ADJUSTABLE BED”, “MASSAGE CHAIR”, OR “ZERO GRAVITY CHAIR”. Listing “mattress” will ONLY exempt the mattress and NOT exempt an entire power bed purchase. Also, ALL accessories not specifically listed as medically necessary are fully taxable.
If the non Rx pad written order does not specifically include the exact above wording it will not qualify for sales tax exemption by the DOR.
